New Prostate Cancer Vaccine to Save Lives

Scientists have done what was previously thought to be impossible and launched a new prostate cancer vaccine, which could finally give hope to men with prostate cancer by boosting their immune system’s ability to fight the disease.

In recent years, the concept of a vaccine for advanced prostate cancer has become increasingly high profile, with major advances helping researchers explore new ways to prolong survival and improve the quality of life in patients with metastatic prostate cancer. The disease is staggeringly prevalent among UK men, with around 25 000 new cases discovered every year.

Now, researchers from the University of Iowa in the US say the vaccine is ready to go.

Prostate Cancer Information: How the Prostate Cancer Vaccine Works

Prostate cancer cells produce a protein known as prostate-specific antigen (PSA). The goal of the vaccine for metastatic prostate cancer is to manipulate the body’s immune system to identify and destroy these cancer cells throughout the body, as enabling a patient’s immune system to attack cancer cells can improve quality of life and extend survival.

Previous studies in mice have already shown the vaccine’s effectiveness, as it produced strong anti-PSA and powerful anti-prostate cancer immunity – and it’s been shown t be just as effective on humans. After receiving the vaccine for a year, at least 40 percent of patients developed immune responses to PSA, with anti-PSA antibodies produced in 42 percent of patients and anti-PSA T-cell responses in 71 percent.

At least 57 percent of patients survived longer than predicted, with most doubling their time.
